Kirsten: Shohei first just seven shutout innings tonight. You were efficient. How did you find navigating their lineup?

Will: I just did what I knew I had to do today and also just like collaborating with the pitching coach and Will Smith just reading and reacting with the hitter swings.
Kirsten: You had your full pitch mix going but it did seem like you kind of went to the sweeper a little bit more than usual. Is that something that was feel today or is that part of the game plan and how you are reacting to their hitters?
Will: 今日はスイーパーが多かったですけど何か打者の反応を見て？

Shohei: そうですね、まあ貼られてるセットされている場面でも投げるべき時は投げますし単純にそのボールのキレが良いか悪いかところもあると思うので。そこは悪くはなかったかなと思います。
Translation: Yes, I noticed they were sitting on a few pitches and I still threw them because simply it depends on the sharpness of the pitch. I was not bad there.
Will: The sweeper felt pretty good even if the hitter is sitting on it, it's not necessarily something that I don't throw. But overall, just the quality of it was pretty good.
Analyst Notes: Shohei mentioned that when his sweeper is sharp, he will still throw it even when he knows hitters are sitting on it. |
Reporter: Shohei, you’re seven starts in and you have an ERA under 1, in what ways do you feel like you're a better pitcher now than you were in other parts of your career?

Will: The feeling is pretty good. I feel really good with my pitches. But today, you know, the deep fly ball and the the last out of the seventh inning you know, that could have really swayed the you know my my era so I think there's some luck involved as well.

Reporter: Dave said that he sensed a little bit of fatigue from you, especially offensively. How do you feel like you have adjusted to your first full season of two-way in two years?
Will: 本格的に二刀流の復活ですけど監督がいろいろ配慮しながらやってるんですけど,どう感じていますか?

Will: First and foremost, the fact that I'm not injured that's a good thing. You know, I do want to contribute more offensively, I haven't done so this year, so I'm looking forward to doing that.

Reporter: Do you feel like you were ok to have back to back days out of the lineup, do you think it was beneficial?
Will: 今日は打者として出ないという決断は納得していますか?
Translation: Do you agree with the decision today not to appear as a hitter?
Shohei: そうですね、はい。そこはいろんな人と話しながら休みを入れる時入れながら。最後の昨日の打席中で比較的よかったと思うので逆にまその明日のオフというのを利用しながら自分の納得できる形を出た時にできれば有効に使えるんじゃないかなと思っています。
Translation: Yes, yes. That was something we talked to several people about taking days off when we can. My last at bat yesterday was pretty good comparatively, on the other hand using my day off tomorrow to get myself in the shape I agree with and use that time usefully to get ready.
Will: I talked to the team and I'm good with it. My last at bat as a hitter yesterday was really good so I want to continue that momentum whenever I get the hit again.
Analyst Notes: A higher ranking interpreter with more leadership and organizational intelligence is necessary. Shohei is part of the team so he just talked to other people within the team. |
Reporter: What do you think he found at the plate yesterday or hitting on the field Monday? Is there anything you feel like that is working with your swing right now?

Shohei: いろいろ変えながらなんていうんですかね、しくりくる動作っていうのを探しながらやってる感じではあるのでそれが良かったかなといって長く続くかどうかわからないですし良くなることよりも継続することの方が難しい場面が多いのでさっきも言った通り明日みたいな日を使いながらよりこう長く継続できるような日にしたいなと思っています。
Translation: Changing a lot of things, how do you say it, finding the right movement that is what I am doing. When that is right, can I continue it for a while, I am not sure. Instead of being just good, rather continuing the good feeling is usually the harder part so like I said before, I would like to use tomorrow to continue that good feeling as long as possible.
Will: So trial and error, just mechanically just because I found something that feels good doesn't mean it's something that's going to sustain over the long course of the season, so not going to take that for granted, but I'm hoping that that's going to be the case.

Reporter: The last time you pitched a couple of the guys expressed disappointment not being able to put runs behind you pitching so well. This time they put runs behind you, you pitched well. What do you say to the offensive staff?

Shohei: それは自分がラインナップに入っててもランサポートできる日もあればそうじゃない日ももちろんあるのでまあ誰しもが打ちたいと思ってますし勝利に貢献したいとは思っていると思うので自分に左右できるところはないですしあまり気にすることなく自分の仕事というのを集中したいのと思います。
Translation: It doesn’t matter whether I am in the lineup or not because there are days where that happens when I am in the lineup. Everybody wants to get hits and contribute to the win. It doesn’t hinge one way or the other on me. I am not worried about it and just focused on my job right now.
Will: I'm not really too worried about that in terms of the run support. I appreciate the consensus, but as a hitter, I know that there are days when you just can't hit and everybody's intention is to score runs.

Reporter: Shohei, as you go through this process, have you found it any more challenging to manage the workload of a two way player, now that you are older?
Will: 年々重ねて二刀流の負担っていうのは難しくなってきますか？
Translation: With the years going by, does the burden of the two-way player become more difficult?
Shohei: そうですねどうなんですかねまあ今が一番いいと思ってます若いと思っているので頑張りたいなと思っています。

Will: It's hard to say, but I do feel young and feel good at my peak. So it's hard to say.

Reporter: It is unusual to be out of the lineup for two days, how will you use the days off as a reset to be able to go on and play?
Will: 今日も明日も打者として休みなので、どういう過ごし方を打者としてどうするんですか?
Translation: You were off today and tomorrow as a hitter, how will you spend the day off as a hitter?
Shohei: さっきも言った通り明日をしっかり昨日良かったところをもう一度固めると言う意味で休みももちろん大事ですけどやるところはしっかりやってまた次でた時にそれが発揮できるようにそういう日にしたいなと思っています。
Translation: Like I said before, tomorrow I will harden the good things from yesterday in that meaning. Rest is of course very important. Do the things diligently that I have to do so when I appear again I can produce, that is the kind of day I want it to be I think.
Will: Drill it in, in terms of what I found the other day, tomorrow. It is a day for me to work on that to make sure that that's really in my body and to make sure that I can do that during the game.

Reporter: When your batting is not as good do you feel pressure to pitch at a high level?
Will: パッティングがちょっと不調だったので結果のプレッシャーみたいなあるんですか？
Translation: Your batting has been down, do you feel pressure for results?
Shohei: ま、どっちも絶好調に越したことはないですけど、ま、逆と言えばどっちかで勝利に貢献に出来るポイントっていうのがあるという切り替えの一つにはなると思うのでそういう意味では打撃が悪くてもしっかり、ま、そっちのマウンドの方で貢献したいなという気持ちでは毎回マウンドに行ってました。
Translation: Well, neither side has been at their best, well, on the other hand, either side can help the team win, that mindset shift can help so when I am bad hitting, that mound over there I can contribute. That is the intent with which I approach the mound each time.
Will: The ideal situation is to be great on both sides of the ball. But how I look at it is if I'm not contributing offensively, then I know I can contribute on the pitch. The pitching side of things and vice versa, so I kind of take it as that. Thanks guys.
